Dementia

Dementia is part of a series of workbooks designed to meet the Continuing Professional Development requirements of care professionals.

Component and/or option of

  • Topic 1 introduces you to the signs and symptoms that might lead someone to be diagnosed with dementia.You will look at how the diseases associated with dementia affect the brain and produce cognitive impairment.
  • Topic 2 teaches you how the diseases associated with dementia affect the person's ability to communicate. You'll look at the importance of communicating positively and effectively with the person with dementia by adapting your communication to their individual needs.
  • Topic 3 looks at how you can understand and manage challenging behaviour by accepting it as a form of communication on the part of the person with dementia.
  • Topic 4 introduces you to an activity-based approach to working with people with dementia. You'll learn how to create meaningful activities from routine tasks and discover how to provide a variety of stimulating activities suited to the individual's tastes and abilities.

When you've completed this course you'll be able to:

  • describe what's meant by the term 'dementia'
  • explain the significance of a variety of approaches and care practices based on the person-centred philosophy of dementia care
  • evaluate your own communication and interaction skills and their impact on people with dementia for who you provide care
  • develop strategies to enable you to understand behaviours which you may find challenging when supporting people with dementia
  • reflect on the activity-based approach to care in supporting people with dementia.
