Maths is about solving problems and detecting patterns, predicting behaviour and outcomes. It provides a way of understanding and describing the world around us. AS level Maths gives you the tools to study and understand abstract ideas and analytical processes.

Entry requirements

A GCSE or equivalent in Maths is strongly recommended for this course.

Specification

This course follows specification 8MA0 from the awarding organisation Edexcel. Full details of the specifications can be obtained from Edexcel's website.

Hours of study

It's really up to you, but guidance from Edexcel suggests AS level Mathematics takes about 150-180 hours, plus additional time for developing your skills, such as for assignment work you submit to your tutor and summary excercises. You will have tutor support for a period of up to 24 months from the date of enrolment. Some students allow 18-24 months to complete an AS level, but others complete the course within a year.

Exams and assessment

Two exams:

  • 2 hours, 62.5% of marks (calculator)
  • 1 hour 15 minutes, 37.5% of marks (calculator)
