The HPD is a professional qualification that equates to S/NVQ Level 4 or foundation degree level. The City & Guilds/ISRM’s most popular qualification is industry-led and aimed at facilities managers, sports development officers, duty officers, aspiring employees and/or those wishing to take on a management role in the sector.
The distance learning course has been designed to provide you with a flexible approach to your learning, undertaking the units in the order that you wish. You will be supported by tutors who have relevant industrial and academic experience in sport and recreation management. Upon successful completion of the course, and after gaining two years’ qualifying work experience, you can apply to become a full member of the ISRM.

Entry requirements & Hours of Study
- You must be 18 years old and should hold a level 3 qualification. Mature students may be admitted through accreditation of prior learning (APL).
- Before you enrol on the course you should contact the ISRM to check your eligibility. If you already hold some relevant qualifications, they may grant exemptions, at their discretion, for certain units.
- You should allow 1200 guided learning hours plus additional time to complete the assignments.
Assignments
To gain the full diploma you will need to study twelve units. Each unit is assessed by a final assignment marked by your tutor and moderated by City & Guilds. There is also an opportunity to complete a practice assignment approximately half way through an unit.
