Alan Perkins, GCSE Maths Higher
Reaching high for the sky
"I joined South West Trains (SWT) as a Guard and soon progressed to a Train Driver and then Drive Instructor. My career with SWT was fun and rewarding. My reason for studying Maths GCSE Higher was conceived by my hobby, which was flying general aviation aircraft. I knew that my ambition to become a Commercial Airline Pilot was going to be steep."
SWT had just launched distance learning with NEC and, with the continuous support of SWT he completed the course and achieved an A grade. The GCSE Maths Higher enabled Alan to go forward and pass all 14 commercial aviation exams first-time to gain the Commercial Pilots Licence.
Alan comments "Being in full-time employment and maintaining a home and girlfriend can remove all spare time, so on occasions it was a ‘juggling act!’. For me the key to success was my motivation to fulfil my dream of becoming that Airline Pilot. Additionally my tutor was a pleasure to work with and he offered nothing but encouragement and support. I attained my ambition of being a Commercial Airline Pilot as a First Officer with Scot Airways, flying a Dornier 328 turbo prop."
Alan goes on to say "Mr Tony Dyers was an outstanding tutor. He and his wife are always welcome on my flight and guaranteed the VIP treatment!"
