From wanting to explore new subjects to working towards higher education and more, there are a number of reasons why students decide to study as a distance learner. For Alex, choosing to study with the National Extension College was about finding the right path to pursue a career he felt truly passionate about.
Initially, Alex had been preparing to study Civil Engineering at university and had already secured his place when doubts began to surface. After deciding to defer for a year and revisiting both the course and the campus, Alex realised that Civil Engineering was not the best next step on his educational journey. Alex later set his sights on Aerospace Engineering—a subject that inspired him far more and something that struck passion. Typically, most Aerospace Engineering degrees require A level Physics, a subject he had once planned to take but unfortunately struggled with whilst in a traditional classroom setting. Determined to reapply for the course he truly felt drawn to, Alex turned to NEC and enrolled in the structured fast-track Physics A level.
Choosing NEC
Alex first heard about NEC through a careers advisor and like most distance learning students, was drawn to the flexibility our online courses offer. When looking into the A level Fast-track courses, Alex particularly liked the sound of the course structure stating:
“The structured fast-track course was well reviewed and meant I wouldn’t have to take multiple gap years to achieve my goal.”
Unfortunately, at the time of starting his fast-track course, it had already been running for some time. For many, starting the course almost two months behind other peers could have been daunting, but Alex quickly found that the support on offer made the transition a positive and manageable one.
“Having started the course nearly 2 months late, the student support team were very accommodating and eager to help. My tutor was also incredibly supportive and gave me lots of great feedback to help me catch up to my peers and get to grips with the assignments.”
A new approach to learning
While this was Alex’s first distance learning course, he had experienced some remote learning previously during his GCSEs due to Covid. These circumstances made him aware of both the challenges and opportunities of online study.
For Alex, NEC’s flexible model of study was a better suited fit for his learning style.
“I struggle with heavily prescriptive teaching and timetabling, so the flexibility of studying in my own time with my tutor there to help me if I needed it was a breath of fresh air.”
The chance to set his own study routine while having reliable support available when needed was a huge factor to his progress and success.
Academic background and progression
Even before studying with NEC, Alex had a strong academic record which included leaving school with 7 GCSEs at Grade 9, another 4 GCSEs between Grades 8 and 6, and three Bs at A level in Maths, History, and Psychology.
While Alex’s earlier education had been positive, Physics remained the missing piece he needed in order to take the next step toward his career goals. NEC gave him the opportunity to secure this particular qualification in time to reapply to university, and with additional guidance, he felt well prepared. “There was also plenty of support when it came to applying for UCAS and the examinations.”
Next steps in Aerospace Engineering
Completing the Physics fast-track course meant that Alex could follow his true ambition and desired career path.
“I’m currently enrolled to study for an Aerospace Engineering BEng at the University of Sheffield.”
With the right A levels in place and a positive learning experience behind him, Alex is now studying a subject that genuinely excites him, knowing that his commitment and NEC’s flexibility helped make it possible.
Reflections and advice for others
When looking back on his journey, Alex showed appreciation for the people and systems that supported him during his time at NEC.
“If I found myself needing another qualification, I would absolutely go with NEC again. The support staff, the exams team and everyone else involved in delivering the course was really welcoming and encouraging. My tutor was incredibly supportive and helpful, especially when I had trouble understanding parts of the course material.”
When asked what advice or useful information he would give to future distance learners, Alex stated “Staying disciplined about studying at home was very hard at first – especially if you’re used to regular schooling. If you start off by being firm with yourself about your study time (treating it almost like a job), it’ll be easier to adjust your hours later down the line and get into a rhythm.”
Reflecting on his overall NEC experience, Alex summed it up clearly: “I’m very happy with the quality of the service I received from NEC.” His journey shows how distance learning can provide not only the flexibility to change direction but also the support and encouragement needed to succeed. By choosing a fast-track A level, Alex has been able to pursue his true passion and is now on course for a future in Aerospace Engineering.
