Charlotte’s Distance Learning Experience: Exploring Her Passion for Science with NEC

3 mins read

There are many reasons why students decide to study through distance learning.

For Charlotte, her decision was motivated by two clear goals which were to explore where her passion for science truly lay and to achieve high grades that would help support her future educational endeavours.

“I wanted to be able to find out what science I had a passion for.”

Like many others, for Charlotte, enrolling in GCSE Combined Science with the National Extension College was her very first experience of distance learning. A distance learning course gave her the chance to learn at her own pace, fit study around her life, and benefit from Cambridge-accredited courses. These are just some of the benefits many students enjoy when studying with the flexibility of a distance learning course compared to a traditional educational setting.

When asked “What made you choose NEC as your distance learning provider? And “How did NEC compare to other providers?” Charlotte replied:

“The ability to do Cambridge-accredited courses.” “It was a better option for me because it was Cambridge-accredited.”

Why distance learning worked for Charlotte

Whilst distance learning offers students a great deal of flexibility, studying online with NEC also provided Charlotte with a structure that helped her stay motivated and focused.

“I achieved high grades; NEC helped me by giving me a structured education.” “The course gave good instructions, and it was very interesting.”

Charlotte also commented on the benefit of flexibility stating “The flexibility was great; it meant I could work at all hours or days.”

This freedom is often a key benefit of distance learning for GCSEs and A levels, as it allows students to balance study with other commitments and from any environment.

Charlotte also appreciated the additional support opportunities NEC offered outside of standard course content.

“The free workshops they had available were really unique and useful.”

Preparing for exams and the future

Completing her GCSE Combined Science course gave Charlotte the confidence and preparation she needed to sit her exams successfully.

“NEC gave me a good structure to feel ready to complete my exams.”

Her educational background meant she was already familiar with independent learning.

“I was doing well in school and was home educated, so this was not too far out of my comfort zone.”

But studying through NEC gave Charlotte a new way to channel her independence, with a structure and framework that helped her aim for high marks.

“I wanted to be able to achieve high marks to be able to later on gain qualifications.”
“I hope to get high marks in my upcoming combined science exams.”

Advice for others considering distance learning

Charlotte feels very positively that distance learning can be an excellent route for students, but it does require a level of commitment and drive.

“If you are considering it, you need to be a highly motivated person.”

Balancing study with wider interests

Distance learning gave Charlotte the time and freedom to pursue her other interests alongside studying. From music and running to conservation work, Charlotte was able to continue to explore her passions whilst still preparing for her exams.

This balance of flexibility and structured education is something NEC strives to provide for all students — whether they are studying GCSEs, A levels, or skills-based qualifications.
