If you find yourself eager to explore the history of art, we have some exciting news for you. The National Extension College (NEC), in partnership with an Art History Charity, has received a grant to help more state school students access A level History of Art.
Thanks to this funding, we are able to offer up to 5 fully funded places per school on our two-year online A level History of Art course — completely free of charge for schools and students. In total, 15 places are available, apply by 31st October 2025.
Why choose History of Art?
History of Art is a subject that helps students build and develop a number of skills including critical thinking, visual analysis, and research skills, while encouraging students to develop a broader cultural awareness. This course is a strong foundation for future studies and careers in the arts, heritage, museums, and many other related fields.
This opportunity is particularly valuable for students who:
- Aren’t currently studying an art subject but would benefit from a humanities or arts-based course — for example, those taking History, English, or Politics.
- Want to strengthen their university applications.
- Are looking for a gifted and talented pathway or the chance to add an extra A level to their timetable.
A flexible and supportive way to study History of Art
Our A level History of Art course follows the Edexcel (9HT0) specification, giving students 24/7 access to high-quality course materials, flexible online learning, and full tutor support across the two years.
The course has an outstanding track record. In 2025, NEC students achieved a 100% pass rate at grades A–C*. Learners typically spend 250–300 hours on the course, working through 11 assignments, and they also receive a free e-book — Thinking about Art: a Thematic Guide to Art History.
“The materials for this Art History online course are excellent. Enrolment was simple and the online platform is pretty easy to use. Most importantly, though, the content of the course has been fascinating so far. I am thoroughly enjoying it.” – Caroline, NEC student
