The National Extension College (NEC) is sorry to hear about the passing of one of our early students, author Lyn Smith.

Lyn Smith was author of a number of books about war and the Holocaust including Forgotten Voices of the Holocaust, Voices Against War, Pacifists in Action, and the bestselling Young Voices.

Lyn studied A levels with the National Extension College before enrolling with the Open University to do a humanities and science degree. She then went on to do a Masters in Russian Studies at Sussex University.

NEC CEO Esther Chesterman says:

“We are deeply saddened to hear of Lyn Smith’s passing. As one of NEC’s early students, she represents the spirit of curiosity and determination that has always defined our learners.

“Lyn went on to make an extraordinary contribution to Holocaust history through her writing, preserving the voices and experiences of those who lived through it. Her work has helped countless readers understand the human impact of those events, and the wider impacts of war. Her legacy will continue through the stories she so carefully recorded.

“We are proud that NEC played a small part in her educational journey and extend our sincere condolences to her family.”
