TLDR
For more than 60 years, the National Extension College (NEC), a not-for-profit educational charity, has been helping students of all ages and from all backgrounds to achieve their learning goals through flexible, high-quality distance learning. Whether you’re a school-age student, an adult returning to education, or a home educator, you can rely on NEC to be here to provide the support, flexibility and expertise that you need to succeed. NEC offers flexible online GCSEs, A levels and vocational courses that can be studied anywhere at any time.
Why Choose the National Extension College?
Founded in 1963 as a not-for-profit distance learning college and a pilot for what later became the Open University, the National Extension College (NEC) has always been a pioneer in flexible distance learning and accessible online education. Empowering students of all ages to achieve their goals.
As part of The Open School Trust, we operate as an independent educational charity steered by a Board of Trustees who are responsible for guiding NEC’s direction and furthering its work. As an independent educational charity our course fees are set on a cost-recovery basis – meaning they remain accessible to individual students, with any surplus reinvested directly into developing innovative new courses and implementing cutting-edge learning technologies alongside enhanced student support services; rather than making a profit.
Our long-standing mission is simple: to make quality education available to everyone, anywhere at any time. Each of our Trustees brings to NEC a wealth of experience and expertise to ensure that the National Extension College continues to thrive, support its mission, and stay at the forefront of online learning – continuing to adapt and prosper in an ever-evolving education landscape, and ensuring we remain financially resilient.
A Trusted Name in Distance Learning for Over 60 Years
At NEC, we understand that every learner’s journey is different. Over more than 60 years we’ve supported hundreds of thousands of students, of all ages and from all backgrounds, to achieve essential qualifications like GCSEs, A levels and vocational courses. Whatever your situation, our experienced tutors and dedicated support team are here to help you stay motivated, make progress, and reach your goals.
When Michael Young, Lord Young of Dartington, founded the National Extension College in 1963, he believed that education should be accessible to everyone. His vision for flexible, home-based learning laid the foundation for what would later inspire the Open University.
“The main hope for the future is education,” he said – recognising that as technology and society evolve people must have the chance to retrain and learn throughout their lives.
“This they will only be able to do if the education system keeps pace, and it will only do so if, besides other reforms, the needs of the home student are fully met.” – Michael Young
That message remains at the heart of NEC today. We continue to support students who need an alternative to conventional education – from home-educated learners to adults balancing study with work and family life. Our courses are designed to fit around your lifestyle, helping you study GCSEs, A levels and vocational qualifications online with expert guidance every step of the way and a wide-ranging choice of support options.
Over more than six decades, we’ve welcomed hundreds of thousands of students from the UK and beyond – helping to transform their lives through flexible online education.
