Browsers
NEC recommends Google Chrome, which you can download for free from www.google.com/chrome. Minimum browser requirements:
- Google Chrome (latest version)
- Mozilla Firefox (latest version)
- Apple Safari (latest version)
- Microsoft Edge (latest version)
NEC uses YouTube to deliver video content. You can check your browser’s compatibility with the YouTube HTML5 player at www.youtube.com/html5.
Browser settings
Your browser should be set to enable cookies and JavaScript. You do not need to enable Java, and please note Flash is no longer supported. Instructions for browser settings are available at the following links:

- Safari: go to Safari > Preferences. The settings are located on the Security and Privacy tabs
Internet connections
NEC provides some content on video format via YouTube, so the recommended internet bandwidth is dependent on the video format selected:
- 1080p: recommended 5 Mbps
- 720p: recommended 2.5 Mbps
- 480p: recommended 1.1 Mbps
You may be able to use learn@nec without the video content with lower internet speeds.
BigBlueButton
BigBlueButton is an online classroom tool for live lessons, discussions, and screen sharing. To use it smoothly, you’ll need at least 0.5 Mbps upstream and 1 Mbps downstream.
Viewing PDFs
You will be required to work with PDF documents during your course. If your browser does not support PDF display, you may find a PDF reader useful. Adobe Acrobat Reader includes a browser plugin that can be downloaded for free from get.adobe.com/uk/reader.

One of the biggest challenges for independent learners can be where to site their exams. So when you enrol with NEC you’ll be guaranteed a place at one of our partnership exam centres.
