How NEC is Helping Melody Stay on Track for University Through Online A levels (Part 2)

10 mins read

TLDR

Melody switched from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) to online A levels with NEC after a major life change threatened to delay her plans for university. Studying for A levels in Biology, Psychology and English Language, she found the structure, flexibility and tutor support she needed to achieve strong results and keep moving towards her goal of studying Law at university.

In the first part of her student story Melody Rumi told us about her A level subjects, why she chose the National Extension College (NEC), and how our online courses are supporting her to prepare for university.

Here Melody tells us more about her experience of studying online distance learning A levels with NEC, the support and structure that is helping her to succeed, her future goals, and her advice for anyone else thinking about online distance learning.

What In Particular Has Worked for You With NEC?

What has worked particularly well for me with NEC is the combination of tutor support, flexibility, and the course structure.

“The tutors have been incredibly helpful, as I am able to contact them whenever I have questions and receive prompt, detailed responses. This level of support has made a significant difference to my understanding, and in many ways feels more accessible than traditional classroom teaching.”

The flexibility of studying in my own time has also been a major advantage. Being able to work at my own pace has allowed me to feel more in control of my learning and manage my time effectively, without the pressure of a fixed classroom schedule.

The course materials have also worked very well for me. I particularly enjoy the A level Psychology course format, which includes interactive elements such as quizzes, as this suits my learning style. At the same time, the course materials used in subjects like A level Biology and A level English Language have been clear and effective, especially with the inclusion of activities and key terminology lists that support understanding and revision.

The assignment structure has been especially useful, as it provides regular exam-style practice along with detailed feedback. This has helped me build confidence and improve consistently, as I can apply feedback directly to future work.

“I was surprised by how supported and effective distance learning with NEC has been. I initially expected it to feel less structured or more isolating, but it has instead provided a high level of guidance and support.”

Taken together, these aspects have not only improved my academic performance, but have also made learning more enjoyable and increased my confidence.

Are There Any Particular Events That Have Stood Out for You During Your Time With NEC?

There have been several key moments during my time with NEC that stood out to me.

  • Joining NEC – One of the most significant moments was joining NEC itself. At the time, I was facing a great deal of uncertainty due to my circumstances, and NEC gave me a genuine opportunity to continue my education and stay on track for university. That moment felt like being given another chance, and it had a very meaningful impact on me.
  • My first assignment result – Another standout moment was receiving my first assignment result. Achieving a high mark gave me a strong sense of reassurance and confidence, especially after everything I had experienced academically before. This continued with subsequent assignments, where consistently positive results reinforced my belief in my abilities and showed me that I was on the right path.
  • Interactions with the NEC team – My interactions with the NEC team were also very memorable. Their support, understanding, and responsiveness made a significant difference during a challenging time, and helped me feel welcomed and reassured from the beginning.

In addition, the ongoing support and feedback from tutors have been a key part of my experience.

“There was a point where I realised that the system was truly working for me, and that I was not only keeping up, but progressing confidently.”

Taken together, these moments have made my experience with NEC both academically rewarding and personally meaningful, and have played an important role in rebuilding my confidence and motivation.

Could You Summarise Your Experience of Education Before Enrolling With NEC?

My experience of education before enrolling with NEC was mixed. I completed the Middle Years Programme (MYP), which was a positive and stable period where I performed well academically. However, my experience during the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) was more challenging, particularly in my later years.

While I was generally a strong student, especially in subjects such as Psychology, Biology, and English, my academic experience was affected by a combination of personal circumstances and inconsistencies within the school environment. There were challenges in terms of teaching quality, access to resources, and the level of academic support provided. In some cases, this meant that students were required to rely on external tutoring to bridge gaps between classroom learning and exam expectations.

Despite these challenges, I remained engaged in my studies and continued to perform well in subjects that aligned with my strengths and interests. My experiences during this time also helped me better understand my academic preferences and areas of focus moving forward.

Due to significant personal circumstances, I was unable to complete the IBDP and sit the final examinations, although I did complete the MYP and achieved those qualifications.

My prior education provided me with a strong academic foundation, but also highlighted the importance of structured support, clear guidance, and a stable learning environment; factors which I have found to be much more consistent in my experience with NEC.

Where Do You Hope Your Studies Will Take You When Your Courses are Complete?

Following completion of my online distance learning courses with NEC, I hope to progress to university in September 2026 to study an LLB in Law. I am currently planning to pursue Law as my primary degree, while still maintaining some flexibility as I continue to develop my academic interests.  I am looking at registering with the Open University (OU) for an LLB.

“My main focus at this stage is a legal career, most likely within the solicitor or barrister route, although I am particularly interested in exploring both pathways before making a final decision. I am also very open to specialising further as my studies progress.”

Alongside Law, I have a strong personal interest in Psychology and Criminology, particularly Criminal Psychology, which has been a long-standing passion of mine. This is something I may choose to explore further either through optional modules or as a future specialisation, depending on how I find these areas within my law degree. I am keen to first experience a range of legal topics before deciding how closely I want to integrate these interests into my career path.

My interest in these fields developed over several years and became a consistent part of how I engaged with learning outside of school. Over time, this helped shape my ambition towards a career that combines analytical thinking with an understanding of human behaviour, particularly within legal and crime-related contexts.

Would You Do Another Course with NEC?

I would consider studying another course with NEC, depending on the course and how it aligns with my future academic goals.

“My experience so far has been very positive, particularly due to the flexibility of the programme, the clear course structure, and the level of tutor support available.”

NEC has provided me with a supportive and reliable learning environment, especially during a time when I needed both stability and guidance. Compared to my previous educational experiences, I have found the system to be more accessible and effective in supporting my progress.

I would primarily choose future courses based on my specific academic and career needs.

“I would certainly be open to studying with NEC again if it was the right fit for my next steps.”

What Advice Would You Offer to Someone Considering Studying by Online Distance Learning?

The main advice I would offer to someone considering online distance learning is to stay disciplined and consistent from the beginning. Without a fixed classroom schedule, it is important to manage your time effectively and create a routine that works for you. Staying on top of deadlines and engaging properly with the course materials makes a significant difference to both understanding and performance.

“I would strongly recommend making full use of tutor support. Asking questions and seeking clarification when needed is essential, and it can greatly improve both confidence and progress throughout the course.”

“One important mindset shift is recognising that you are more in control of your learning than you might initially expect. While distance learning can seem isolating at first, in my experience it is not as isolating as it appears, especially when you actively engage with tutors and the course.”

That said, it is important to be aware that it does require motivation, and there may be moments where it feels challenging or even a little lonely. However, these challenges become easier to manage over time as you adapt to the structure and develop your own routine.

What Interests Do You Have Outside of Studying?

Outside of studying, I have a wide range of interests, particularly in Psychology, with a strong focus on Criminal Psychology. I enjoy learning about human behaviour, crime, and real-life cases through documentaries, online content, and independent research. I am especially interested in topics related to mental and physical health, particularly in understanding my own experiences and how they connect to trauma, which has made this area of interest even more meaningful to me.

I am also very creative and enjoy activities such as reading, writing, and poetry, as well as art in different forms, including drawing, painting, and crafts. I find these activities both relaxing and a good way to express myself. I also enjoy analysing films, particularly those with psychological themes, such as Awakenings and Shutter Island, as this allows me to combine my creative and analytical interests.

In addition, I have a strong interest in personal development. I enjoy maintaining routines, setting goals, and staying organised through tools such as to-do lists and planning systems. I also value self-reflection and mindfulness, and I am particularly interested in topics related to mental health and wellbeing.

I enjoy socialising and spending time with others whenever possible, and I value opportunities to connect and collaborate. I also have a keen interest in public speaking, as I enjoy expressing ideas and engaging with others in a confident and structured way.

Are You Happy With the Service You Received from NEC? What Could Have Been Done Better?

“I am very happy with the service I have received from NEC. The level of support, structure, and flexibility has made a significant positive difference to my learning experience, particularly during a challenging period in my life.”

The tutors have been consistently supportive, responsive, and helpful, and the feedback on assignments has been clear and constructive, allowing me to improve continuously.

The course structure has also worked very well for me, as it provides a clear and organised learning pathway while still allowing flexibility to study at my own pace. This balance has helped me stay motivated and feel more in control of my studies.

If anything could be improved, it would be small enhancements to the presentation of learning materials, such as making resources slightly more interactive in certain subjects. The A level Psychology course format, which combines content with quizzes, felt particularly engaging and effective for my learning style; it would be good to see similar content in some of the other subjects.

“Overall, my experience has been very positive, and I feel well supported in my studies.”

How NEC Helped Melody Feel Fully Prepared for Her A level Exams

Melody was keen to emphasise the positives of studying for her A levels with NEC compared to her experience at school:

  • course content that is focused and easy to grasp
  • access to all of the information and learning applicable to her assignments and upcoming exams – so that no additional ‘bridging’ work to fill in any gaps herself is necessary
  • expert tutors who are available to ask any questions, at any time, and who give a straightforward answer
  • knowledge of, and preparation for, exam content in the course materials, resources provided, and the course assignments.

“You are fully prepared for exams – assignments are marked, you are sent feedback about them which you can apply to your exams; so you can continue improving.” – Melody
