Workplace returners and those seeking a change of career given the opportunity to apply for a bursary to study with NEC Wednesday, 05 July 2023

NEC’s 60th Birthday Bursary will support one learner to get back into the workplace or to plan a change of career.

The National Extension College (NEC), is marking a special birthday in 2023 as we celebrate 60 years since the college was founded by Michael Young, Lord Young of Dartington.

Established in August 1963 as a not-for-profit distance learning provider, NEC has a strong, proud heritage of widening access to education. Our aim is to transform lives and open up possibilities for people of all ages by offering access to essential qualifications that can be studied flexibly, at any time and anywhere to enable every student to achieve their amibitions.

To celebrate our 60th birthday we are offering either one lifelong learner the chance to develop their skills and knowledge in order to get back into the workplace. Or, for adults already working, a chance to study towards a qualification that can help them with a change of career.

The NEC 60th Birthday Bursary will be for one student and for a maximum of £1,000 towards their study with NEC. To apply for the bursary applicants will need to:

  • Provide a personal statement (up to 300 words) outlining their educational background, their motivation for applying for the bursary, and why they are interested in engaging in study with NEC.
  • Provide an additional statement (up to 100 words) to indicate how receipt of the bursary, if successful, will enable them to achieve their goal(s).

The recipient of the bursary will gain access to education drawing on NEC’s expertise, quality course materials and dedication to our learners, and will enable them to move towards their goals. NEC’s model of flexible online courses will provide them with the freedom to study flexibly around their current life and work commitments.

All applications should be made via the NEC 60th Birthday Bursary Application form. Please note: Applications closed on 4th August 2023.

The announcement of the bursary recipient will be made during August to coincide with NEC’s 60th Birthday celebrations.

The NEC 60th Birthday Bursary is being funded by NEC Trustee and former CEO Dr Ros Morpeth OBE. We especially welcome applicants from a lower socio-economic background for whom finance may be a barrier to study and who may otherwise miss out on educational opportunities.
