How Online A levels are Helping Melody to Stay on Track for University (Part 1)

11 mins read

TLDR

Melody switched from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) to online A levels with NEC after a major life change threatened to delay her plans for university. Studying for A levels in Biology, Psychology and English Language, she found the structure, flexibility and tutor support she needed to achieve strong results and keep moving towards her goal of studying Law at university.

After leaving the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) due to personal circumstances, Melody Rumi opted to study A levels in Biology, Psychology and English Language online with the National Extension College (NEC).

Choosing subjects that aligned with her strengths, Melody has since achieved high marks for her course assignments and received strong predicted grades for her final exams.

NEC’s structured, flexible, online distance learning A level courses and responsive tutor support have helped Melody to stay on track for university. The ability to study at her own pace, with clear materials and exam-style assignments, has helped to improve both her confidence and performance.

With NEC’s help to continue her education without delay after leaving the IBDP, Melody plans to go on to study Law at university.

We asked Melody to tell us more about her experience of studying online distance learning A levels.

Which Subjects are You Studying with NEC?

I am studying for three A levels with NEC:

What Motivated You to Chose These A levels?

Mainly I picked my subjects based off of a combination of academic strengths, personal interest, and past experiences in my previous curriculum (and school).

Psychology has always been a passion of mine, so I knew I wanted to continue with it, especially because I used to get excellent grades in it, despite difficult circumstances at the time; I also had an amazing teacher.

I had almost completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) before I changed to A levels. I had taken Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry at Higher Level, and French, English Language & Literature, and Mathematics AA at Standard Level.

Chemistry was challenging for me despite having a tutor, and I struggled to achieve the results I hoped for, likely due to personal issues at the time. French was difficult because of limited tutoring support and some distractions in class that affected my concentration. With Mathematics, I performed well in class but struggled in exams, which I think was due to a gap between learning content and the way it was tested, compounded by personal circumstances.

English was one of my stronger subjects, partly because I had excellent teaching and a focused learning environment free from distractions. Biology has always been a consistent interest for me, as both my parents are doctors and I had initially considered a medical career. Despite personal challenges, I was able to achieve good results in Biology, particularly in essays and certain topics, which reinforced my decision to continue with it.

“Ultimately, I selected these subjects because they align with my interests and strengths, and I feel more confident and motivated studying them now. Narrowing down to subjects I enjoy has made a significant difference in my engagement and academic performance.”

What Grades Have You Achieved in Your Subjects, and How Has NEC’s Structure of Support Contributed to That?

So far, my assignment results, which contribute towards my predicted grades, have been very strong. Although I have currently completed three assignments, I have achieved high marks in each of them: 30/30 in my first A level Psychology assignment, 23/27 in my first A level Biology assignment, and 24/25 in my first A level English Language assignment.

NEC’s structure has supported me significantly, particularly through its focused and relevant learning materials.

“The content is very specific and there is no “waffle”, which has made my revision much more efficient, as everything I learn is directly useful for the assignments. Initially, I was unsure how effective learning from the course materials would be, but I found them to be clear and helpful in practice. I also found the glossary of key terminology at the end of each unit especially useful.”

I also particularly enjoy the A level Psychology course format, which includes more interactive elements such as quizzes, as this suits my learning style well.

Another key strength is the accessibility of tutors. I love that I can message them at any time with questions and receive prompt responses. This has been extremely helpful and, in many ways, more efficient than traditional classroom settings, where it is not always as easy to get immediate support.

Which Aspects of the Courses are Helping You the Most to Achieve Your Exam Results and Build Your Confidence?

Although I have not yet sat my final exams, the courses have significantly improved my confidence through my assignment results, which contribute towards my predicted grades.

One of the most helpful aspects has been the pre-assignment quizzes. Having unlimited attempts allows me to focus on understanding rather than performance, and helps me clearly identify my strengths and areas for improvement before moving on. This has made my revision much more targeted and effective.

“The assignments themselves have been extremely valuable, as they are closely aligned with exam-style questions. Being able to complete these and receive feedback quickly has helped me build both my skills and confidence, as I can immediately apply what I have learned and improve for the next task.”

I also really value the accessibility and support of tutors. I can ask questions whenever I need to, and their prompt and encouraging responses make a big difference to my understanding and confidence.

In terms of course structure, I particularly enjoy the A level Psychology course, which includes interactive elements such as quizzes alongside the content, as this suits my learning style well. At the same time, the course materials in A level Biology and A level English Language are also very helpful, especially the activities and key terminology lists.

Overall, these aspects combined have played a key role in building my confidence and preparing me for my final exams.

How Has Completing Your Course with NEC Affected Your Next Steps, Like University or Employment?

NEC has had a truly significant impact on my next steps towards university. Due to personal circumstances and a major life change, I had to move countries and was unable to complete my final exams with the IBDP, as it was too late to register. At that point, I was facing the very real possibility of losing an entire university year. In addition to this, I would have almost wasted the time I had already invested in the IBDP, and would have had to sit my exams in November instead, meaning I would be behind in starting university. This would have also taken a further toll on my mental health.

However, after exploring NEC’s structure and exam entry process, I realised that I would still be able to sit my exams and apply to university in my intended year, September 2026. This opportunity meant a great deal to me, as it allowed me to stay on track with my goals and regain a sense of stability and direction during a very uncertain time.

“Thanks to NEC, I am able to sit my A level exams as planned, rather than having to delay them to November or even the following year.”

NEC has also played an important role in helping me better understand my academic interests and future path. Moving from the IBDP to A levels meant focusing on fewer subjects, which reduced pressure and allowed me to engage more deeply with the ones I genuinely enjoy. This has helped me realise how strongly I am drawn to Law and Psychology, and has encouraged me to explore potential careers in these areas with more confidence.

“Ultimately, NEC has not only enabled me to continue my education without delay, but has also provided me with clarity, confidence, and reassurance at a crucial point in my life. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity, as it has had a very positive impact on both my academic journey and my outlook for the future.”

What Made You Choose NEC as Your Online Distance Learning Provider?

I chose NEC as my online distance learning provider due to significant changes in my personal circumstances, including moving countries and having to leave the IBDP unexpectedly. This created uncertainty around my ability to continue my education in a traditional setting and raised concerns about potentially delaying my university plans.

At that point, I needed a flexible and accessible alternative that would still allow me to complete my qualifications in time for my intended university entry.

“NEC stood out as it provided a clear and structured route to A level completion, even for students joining outside of a conventional school environment. What also really drew me to NEC was how welcoming, understanding, and supportive the team were throughout the process.”

In particular, the Course Advice Team played a key role in this experience, as their responsiveness, clarity, and reassurance made a significant difference during a very uncertain and stressful time, and I genuinely can’t overstate how supported and understood they made me feel when I needed it most.

“A key factor in my decision was NEC’s approach to distance learning, which combines independent study with consistent tutor support and structured assignments. This allowed me to continue studying in a way that was both manageable and academically focused, while still receiving guidance when needed.”

In general, NEC offered me a realistic and supportive pathway to remain on track for university in my intended year. It provided stability during a period of uncertainty and ensured that my education could continue without disruption, which made it the right choice for me.

Before Deciding to Study with NEC, How Did NEC Compare to Other Distance Learning Providers?

Before deciding to study with NEC, I explored a number of alternative distance learning options, particularly within the IBDP. However, many were either unavailable in my situation or unable to accommodate me at that stage, especially given the timing and my circumstances. This made it increasingly difficult to find a realistic pathway to continue my education without significant delay.

“In comparison, NEC stood out immediately due to its clear structure, flexibility, and accessibility. The communication was significantly better, with quick and helpful responses, which made the process much easier to navigate. Unlike other providers, where the exam process and next steps often felt unclear or uncertain, NEC provided a straightforward and transparent system that I could understand and rely on.”

Another key difference was the level of support and understanding. NEC felt far more welcoming and human in its approach, particularly in how it handled my situation. While other providers felt less flexible and more impersonal, NEC was reassuring and accommodating from the beginning, which made a significant difference during a stressful time.

As a whole, NEC was not only the most suitable option available to me, but also the one that best aligned with my needs and priorities. It offered both the practical support and personal reassurance that I was unable to find elsewhere, making it the clear choice.

Is Studying With NEC Your First Experience of Studying Through Distance Learning?

While I have had some exposure to distance learning in the past, this is my first time studying fully through a structured distance learning provider like NEC. Previously, my experience was limited to occasional online learning during school, such as lessons during the COVID-19 period or specific days where work was set remotely. I also had online tutoring in subjects like Chemistry and Mathematics. However, these experiences were often inconsistent and lacked structure, making them quite different from my current studies.

In contrast, studying with NEC has been a much more organised and supportive experience. Although I initially expected distance learning to feel isolating or less guided, I found the transition easier than anticipated. It was slightly challenging at first, but I quickly adapted and became more confident in managing my own learning.

“One of the most positive aspects has been the level of independence and flexibility. Being able to work at my own pace has allowed me to feel more in control of my studies, while still having access to tutor support whenever needed. In particular, the ability to contact tutors easily and receive timely responses has made a significant difference and has often felt more efficient than traditional classroom support.”

As a result, this experience has changed my perspective on distance learning. While I still value the social aspect of in-person education and believe a combination of both would be ideal, I have found distance learning with NEC to be far more effective, structured, and supportive than my previous experiences.

What Was Your Motivation for Studying at This Point in Your Life?

My motivation for studying at this point in my life was both academic and personal. Academically, I wanted to stay on track for university and avoid losing a year, as completing my A levels is essential for progressing into my chosen career path. I am genuinely enthusiastic about my subjects, particularly Psychology, and I am also interested in aspects of Biology and English, especially as they support my long-term goal of pursuing a career in Law. Achieving strong grades and gaining the necessary qualifications were therefore key motivating factors for me.

At the same time, my motivation was deeply personal. After experiencing a major life disruption, continuing my studies became a way for me to rebuild and move forward. It gave me a sense of stability, routine, and purpose during a very uncertain time. I also felt strongly that this was my opportunity to prove to myself that my circumstances do not define me, and that I am still capable of achieving my goals.

There was also a sense of urgency, as I recognised that this was my chance to regain control of my academic path and avoid further disruption. This pushed me to take responsibility for my future, become more independent, and stay focused on my goals.

Taken together, studying at this point has not only been about gaining qualifications, but also about personal growth, resilience, and rebuilding confidence in myself and my abilities.
