Incredible news!
National Extension College (NEC) A level Economics tutor Roy Bowden received a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours.
Roy received the honour in recognition of his services to further education.
We asked Roy his thoughts on being awarded a BEM and to tell us just why he loves teaching economics.
Receiving the British Empire Medal
“I was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to further education in the King’s Birthday Honours, published in June. I have taught A level Economics for many years and in July 2025, completed 20 years as a governor in an FE/HE College.”
“It was a totally unexpected, but very gratifying, award to receive after so many years of dedicated and conscientious service to students of all ages and backgrounds, helping them to achieve their full potential in such a wide variety of careers.” – Roy
“As I point out to my students, Economics is a most fascinating subject to teach and study. It has always been a very versatile qualification in that it does not channel you into a specific range of university courses or careers. The fascination stems from the fact that it is a subject, the content of which evolves as real-world circumstances and conditions change. It is also a subject with strong academic credentials.“
NEC Congratulates Roy on his Award
Speaking when NEC heard Roy had received this prestigious award, CEO Esther Chesterman said:
“We are so proud to have Roy on the team. Being awarded a British Empire Medal is a phenomenal achievement, and we are absolutely thrilled for him. It is a well-deserved recognition of Roy’s dedication and incredibly inspiring story.” – Esther
