TLDR
Studying GCSE or A level Biology online gives you the flexibility to earn a nationally recognised qualification at your own pace. Whether you’re aiming for a career in healthcare, science, conservation, or simply building foundation skills, NEC’s distance learning courses cover everything you need.
Why Study Biology?
It comes as no surprise that biology is a highly studied course in not only traditional school settings, due to STEM being a large focus in school curriculums, but also through distance learning platforms. But why study biology? And why is it considered such an important subject?
The Real World Impact of Studying Biology
As a subject, Biology covers a variety of topics that affect our everyday life whether we take the time to notice it or not. Often referred to as ‘The study of Life’, biology teaches us about the real world including:
- Nature and living things, such as animals and plants.
- Living organisms including cells, molecules and enzymes.
- Evolution
- Genetics
- Ecosystems
Having a basic understanding of these topics is beneficial as it teaches people how to look after their body, making smart choices for their own health, as well as having a better awareness of the impact we have on the world around us.
GCSE vs. A Level Biology: Which is Right for You?
With NEC, you can study biology at two different qualification levels. If you’re wondering what course is best suited for you, here’s what you need to know.
- GCSE Biology: The GCSE level course focuses on the more foundational principles of biology such as cells, the human anatomy, genetics etc. The course is designed to help you learn key connections in our world and understand the impact biology has in our everyday lives. There is no entry requirement in terms of previous knowledge and is a great option for learners starting their scientific journey.
- A level Biology: The A level course provides students with a deeper understanding of the world around them, focusing on topics including biodiversity, cell structures, ecosystems and more. Like the GCSE course, there is no entry requirement, however some learners may find the knowledge gained from GCSE biology provides a helpful foundation for the A level.
Careers in Biology: Where Can This Qualification Take You?
“Biology opens doors to diverse career paths, including roles in research, healthcare, environmental conservation, and education. You could also explore careers such as research scientists, environmental consultants, healthcare professionals, educators, or even science communicators.” – UCAS
Students who study biology in further education can open doors to a number of career paths including dentistry, medical, conservation, microbiology, veterinary, marine biology, ecology, zoology, pharmaceutical and more.
Often these careers rely on qualifications at a degree level to prove a high understanding of the subject, but A level qualifications are considered a great stepping stone throughout a student’s education.
The Benefits of Studying Biology Online
“The A level Biology course is very broad and gives a real flavour of so many aspects of Biology. It provides a fantastic foundation for future studies whether they are biology based or something different.” – Usha, NEC Biology Tutor
One of the most common reasons for people choosing to study through a distance learning provider over a traditional school setting or college, is because this style of study allows students a great level of freedom and flexibility. Students have the ability to study at a time and place that best suits them. But does this style of education work for science subjects?
How Practicals and Exams Work through Distance learning
Many people looking to return to or continue their education, and wish to study a science subject like biology, often wonder if studying online is a possibility. Thankfully, subjects that include core practicals are still achievable online through distance learning.
At NEC, our dedicated tutors teach students the core practicals that are needed for exam success. This varies by course, but each core practical typically includes a method, list of equipment and some sample results. Some of these practicals can be practiced safely at home. If the experiment is not safe to complete at home, or if the student doesn’t feel comfortable completing the experiment in their own setting, a detailed description of the investigation will give them the information needed.
In the exams themselves, no practical element takes place but the knowledge gained from previous practicals will play a key part in the written work. A level biology will also include a Non-exam assessment (NEA):
- An additional assessment to provide an opportunity to gain practical skills endorsement to demonstrate both practical skills and knowledge
- A separate grade
- The endorsement gained is needed from some universities towards science programmes
NEC are proud to have partnered with a number of trusted specialist exam centres located across the UK. You can find out more about how these work in the Exams Handbook.
